What makes a CMS, a CMS? cskelly   Mar-17-09
This is an age old question in the Content Management world. In 2007, Deane at Gadgetopia came up with some really good answers. What's great is the list is broken down into essentials and nice-to-haves.At it most basic level a CMS should:Accomodate information that can take many forms -- text, images, hyperlinks, etc..Enable users that are often non-technical personnel to manage site content.Facilitate content management as a collaborative effort that may involve various roles. There are many definitions of a CMS. Here is the CMS defined according to typo3. A content management system (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include compute

Content Modeling cskelly   Mar-15-09
A key task in the scope of Content Management, is Content Modeling -- this is when you get raw content to fit into some common model of types and elements. Once defined, the types and their elements fit into a hierarchy (A.K.A - Taxonomy or "Content Tree"). To break this down a little further, let's first take a look a "types".Content Types At the foundation of most CMS systems is the concept of types - Content Types (A.K.A. - Content Objects, Classes). This enables developers/administrators to structure content according to it's format/function -- examples of types might be "articles", "blog post", "FAQ", "image gallery", "product description", etc..The way that types are defined varies greatly between Content Management Systems. A basic CMS may provide some pre-defined types with a few options, where as a more robust CMS will allow for custom types, a

No 2 Tag Clouds are the Same cskelly   Feb-19-09
Data visualization is an expressive medium and tag clouds abound in the Web 2.0 world. The overall concept of a tag cloud is simple -- rank the keywords (tags) used on a Website or blog, and according to popularity. The most frequently used tags appear larger, while least used tags are smaller. Many blogs, and some CMS systems, have built-in tagging tools that use an internal "tag" field to mark content and create tag clouds. If your site however does not have a built-in tagger, you may want to consider one of these external tagging tools that provide external tag cloud generation: http://www.tagcloudster.com http://www.tag-cloud.de http://www.tagcrowd.com http://www.tagcloud-generator.com Each tag cloud creator uses a word ranking algorithm to generate the cloud. However, the actual list of tags (words) that gets clouded varies greatly. Possible Tag Cloud Methods Method 1] Crawl the site and extr

Google: Organic vs. Paid Results cskelly   Feb-10-09
I was recently showing my not-super-techy husband how Iatek placed for various keywords in Google -- content management, CMS, .NET CMS, etc.. and was surprised to hear him say that he when searching in Google he "never" clicks on the paid-for AdWords results.Maybe it's a layout / design issue with the Google UI, but it seems his tendancy is to ignore those first highlighted results -- the "sponsored links" at the top, and instead aim for the organic results that appear first according to Google's revelancy algorithm. This made me curious. Do you normally click on the paid-for AdWords results or do you head straight for the organic results?  Take the Poll Here

Content Management and.. cskelly   Apr-24-06
In the post-boom era, a debate has transpired between developers of website management tools and content management products. With a new emphasis on Web 2.0 -- the shift on perception of the Web as a "collection of Websites" to a full-fledged computing platform the server Web applications to end users, seems to be accellerating a shift from pure content management systems (CMS) to full website management tools. Web administrators want greater control interactivity, ideally through the same CMS interface. This may include user management, discussion boards, community tools, UI and design management tools. While it is still critical for the CMS to include features centric to content management (content authoring, publishing and workflow), businesses are looking for their CMS to integrate seemlessly with other aspects of the site, such as forums, RSS syndication, member management, e-commerce and blogging.Highly-configurable CMS applications
